Hudson’s First Words

I’ve given up tracking words. Hudson’s saying so many these days, I just can’t do it anymore. Once he said “Cash” for Johnny Cash, I figured he was way beyond my documentation. So without further adieu, here’s the list in all its glory. I hope he enjoys looking at this one day when he’s older and has kids of his own.

Protowords: These are invented words but used consistently. For example, a child might say “gaga” every time they want their bottle. Hudson only had one of these that I knew of. I wonder how many he had I couldn’t recognize?
• Bot (Milk/Bottle)

Context-Bound Words: These are one context words. For example, Hudson would call our cats “Cad” but he would not call a cat in a book or a stuffed animal “cat” until months later.
• Cat

Real Words: These are words that are context-free. Criteria includes*: 1) same word used consistently to signal the same meaning 2) the word approximates the sound of the conventional word 3) the word is spoken with the intention of communicating 4) the word is used in a variety of settings.
